Foxrox Electronics Captain Coconut
Take the three effects that came to define the classic Hendrix tone, and stick em all in a box… One please! Since the last Hot Pedal issue showing the Hendrix style Microvibe pedal, I've had a load of emails asking about the pedals Hendrix used and what's the best way to nail his tone without the vintage price tag.
Foxrox Electronics Captain Coconut
Well, as far as effects go, this is it. Hendrix in a box, and I'm not talking about some cheap digital amp modelling pedal thrown together in some marketing sortie on Voodoo Chile wannabes, but a faithfull reproduction of the pedals Hendrix actually used, all in one box. How cool is that!

Go Nuts
The Captain Coconut is actually 3 effect pedals in one. They are an Octave, Uni-vibe and Fuzz face circuit all housed together in one robust gig worthy package. Individualy the effects are as good as they get. Lets look at each effect in turn.
Octave
This Octave is a copy of the famous Octavia effect. The way it works is your guitar signal is split, and then one signal is fed back into the original but partially out of phase, which produces a harmonically rich upper octave tone.
Provibe
The classic Uni-Vibe tone. This circuit has been tweaked to perfection. You can even plug an expression pedal in and control the speed for those Leslie cabinet type effects.
FuzzFoot
This reproduction of the Fuzz Face circuit is near perfection. To my ears the Fuzz Face is still the best fuzz circuit ever made and responsible for many of the great guitar sounds.
Each of the three effects has a musical character and an ability to deliver those classic tones with an unparalleled authenticity, but this pedal goes way beyond what you might think. Any decent pedal tech will know at an instant the years of experience and dedication it would have taken to get a complex circuit like this right. The use of an A/C circuit keeps the noise to an absolute minimum and relays are employed to keep your guitar signal from ever going anywhere it doesn't need to. True bypass to the extreme and the end result is truly amazing.

Red House(ing)
This particular example is one of only 130 burgundy coloured original Captain Coconuts. (There is now a new model available with some cool extra features).
With the clever patching options on the back you can select the effects to be in any order you like. Put the vibe effect before or after the fuzz or the octave. It's a simple yet very effective idea that has been copied by a number of all in one manufacturers.

How much should I pay?
An original in this sort of lightly gigged condition is going to set you back around £250 to £300. Add up any boutique manufactures versions of these three classics and you'll be paying around double that.
This pedal goes further than just Hendrix. It delivers something special in its own rite and should be high on any tone hounds wish list. Big thanks to Mister Tone for this one.
