Love Pedal Eternity NYE 1999. I'm standing on the shores of Sydney Harbour watching the most spectacular fireworks display ever seen. Erupting in 40 foot high letters on the side of the Harbour Bridge is the word 'Eternity'. Every one around me thinks this spectacular display is to usher in the new millennium, but I know it's all to celebrate the launch of the new overdrive stomper from Love Pedal. | |
| Something old, something new Love Pedal is hailed, as one of the best vintage style pedal manufacturers in today's somewhat overcrowded boutique pedal market. The reason for this is simple. So many manufacturers have gone down the route of taking an old design such as the TS-808 Tube Screamer for example, and basically producing this circuit with better quality components with maybe the odd minor change. This isn't a bad thing, and in fact it has produced some of my favourite stompers such as the Full Tone Full Drive. What separates Love Pedal is their unique and innovative twist on these classic designs.
The Eternity Overdrive is actually a clean boost, an OD/Distortion pedal and a Treble Booster all in one small box. You create your tones by blending elements of all three, and the results are amazing. The Treble Boost replaces a normal tone control so instead of finding the spot that's not too fizzy or not too dull like on a normal stomper, you simply dial in the treble boost that gives you a more dynamic and responsive top end.
The actual design of the circuit is quite simple, but that simplicity translates into an incredible tone. I can honestly say that this pedal is producing some of the best sounds I've ever heard from an OD pedal. It sounds and feels like an overdriven amp. In fact driving the pedal with an old treble booster produces tones that even Brian May would be proud of.
Another very cool feature is that the pedal comes with different op-amp chips that are interchangeable for different warmer or darker tones.
As with a lot of vintage circuitry the output impedance isn't as low as the modern designs. This means that the pedals you place after it will have an impact on its tone, but it's simply a matter of finding where it works for you in your pedal chain.
If great tone is your passion then you owe it to yourself to hunt one of these down it give it a blast. It could change your life. |
