B&M Fuzz Unit

Don't be concerned my fellow stomper set, this is far from just another fuzz. This is one of the rarest pedals I've ever seen. Seriously, if you see one, just get it. Don't argue, don't haggle, just get it.
B&M Fuzz Unit
Hottest Fuzz
The B&M Fuzz Unit is a variant on the classic Tonebender fuzz made by Colorsound in the mid 70's. Manufactured for English music retailer Barnes and Mullins it's basically a re-branded three knob Tonebender, the third knob being a very clever tone control. It's an active balance tone control which allows you to dial in either more bass or more top end. Fact is there's always loads of top end so the real plus is being able to tailor the lower frequencies to suit what ever amp you're playing. Plugged into an old Vox ac10 I can dial in enough bottom end so that it sounds monstrously huge, but into a Fender Twin I can back the bottom end off so the wooliness that is often apparent with fuzzes into Fenders disappears completely. So what we have is a vintage fuzz pedal that you can tailor to suit any amp. And that's not even the best thing.

Awe In One
Think of the best distortion pedal you've ever heard, the attack and sharpness of when the pick hits the strings. Now combine that attack with the most ferocious heavy high gain fuzz you've ever heard, and you have this beauty. The complex harmonic structure of a great sounding fuzz is what's lacking in most straight ahead distortion pedals but the attack of a good sounding distortion pedal is so fierce and sharp that for fast moving guitar parts they surpass the traditional fuzz. The B&M just kicks arse in both these areas. Every nuance of the pick on the strings is audible. You can almost tell what brand logo is embedded into the pick the attack is so sharp and clear thanks to its silicon transistors, and the incredible richness of the sustained tone is really fantastic. There's nothing light about its tone in anyway either. If you're looking for a unique heavy tone, this will be very hard to beat. The output level is as is with a lot of old British Fuzz's is fairly low so start with the output level on full and tweak the sustain (fuzz) and tone from there.

How much should I pay?
There are a couple of things to consider with this tone behemoth. The first is how incredible it sounds into everything. It's truly ridiculous. The next is just how rare it is. There can't have been more than a few hundred ever made to start with, but from time to time one will pop its head above water looking for a god home. Even with these factors considered it's still a shock how much these fetch. One recently sold on the bay for £600. That's around the same price as an original 'Hendrix' NKT germanium transistor Fuzz. It's an incredible vintage fuzz that lets you get down and dirty with any amp you own, so there's a slim chance you could justify its price to your other half. My wife says very slim.
